Data science and big data in schools project

Funding phase III
01.08.2023 until 31.07.2026

The aim of the project is to develop further materials on the topics of analyzing environmental data, epistemic programming, data awareness, from regression to artificial neural networks. To this end, we are developing a server infrastructure that can provide digital support for teachers in their classrooms. Our training courses are being further developed and offered nationwide as e-training courses.

In the further development of all materials, we are working towards the goal of "Data Science for all".

Play "Apple or popcorn?"

As part of Paderborn University's 50th anniversary celebrations, pupils from the Gymnasium Theodorianum are performing a play that playfully illustrates how artificial intelligence (AI) works. This play was developed in the context of the 'Project Data Science and Big Data in Schools' (ProDaBi) series of lessons, in which the pupils learned about the basics of decision trees and artificial intelligence using a data card game.

Computer Science as a compulsory subject in NRW in grades 5 and 6: Two new ProDaBi lesson series

As part of the introduction of the compulsory subject of computer science in North Rhine-Westphalia in grades 5 and 6 (NRW) and a focus on data science and artificial intelligence in the new curriculum, we have been developing, testing and evaluating two series of lessons on the topics of data awareness and machine learning with decision trees for grade 6 since 2021. At the beginning of 2022, these series of lessons will be published in the School Internal Curriculum (SILP) NRW.
